In contrast, Tadeo, aged 6, has only one Matador suit crafted by his grandmother. His (single) mother lives a modest life with her parents and supports his determination to achieve Matador status against the odds. Deeply fearful of Tadeo being injured, she quietly hopes he will outgrow this obsession.

‘El Maletilla’ Meaning a bullfighter with great potential, Cristobal, aged 10, dresses to fight the 150kg bull called "Mañito" or little brother. His parents support him but simultaneously fear for his safety. They are able to pay for each bull he fights but do not have a ranch or stem from a bullfighting background, so he trains with the sponsored assistance of matadors who see his potential and promise.

Cristóbal Arenas Moncayo is 10 years old “To fight a bull is something beautiful, there are a lot of emotions… adrenaline, excitement and the danger is always there. As a torero you are always afraid but this is normal, it makes you stronger and helps you to take control of your fear… from that point you move ahead.”

Greeting fans after his bullfight at Cinco Villas, Cristóbal felt he did not perform his best at this bullfight, yet he still earned one bulls ear. The bull gored him during his fight, and when asked about how he felt about it he said “it’s an occupational hazard.” Many spectators said that although he was the youngest of the seven bullfighters that day, “…he preformed the most beautifully and elegantly. He has a great deal of talent. It's very exciting and inspiring to watch him. He's like a grown man in a child's body. He is exquisite!"

Positive Parenting - Bimbi, 70, lives with her daughter Maria Majo, 40, in a remote village in Chimbu, Papua New Guinea.
The two look after Maria's daughter Ellen, 6, and granddaughter (also named) Ellen, 2. Maria started taking care of Ellen (2) when her mother left, and her father, Gaby, took a job in the city. A very rough, dirt road makes the journey home long and difficult, so he only returns for major family events. “...now that I am more positive with her and spend more time listening and communicating with her, Ellen listens more and will do the household chores before running off to play. Now, if I tell her it is going to rain so she should come home early, she listens and gets home quickly.”

Positive Parenting - Wasna, 25, has six children and lives in Goglme, Chimbu.
Wasna used to be a gambler. She used to lose track of time when she was out gambling. Her six children would cook for themselves and do all the chores because she would get home so late. Due to the positive parenting program she says “Now, I have stopped. I am organised and I spend a lot more time with my children… I am so happy that I got the training, but I regret not knowing these things before. I am happy because I have improved myself .” Wasna also used to hit and shout at her children. But after learning that violence could lead to psychological damage in her children, she immediately stopped and started using new ways to communicate with and discipline her children.

Positive Parenting - Tobia’s grandchildren help her peel potatoes from the garden.
Tobia has six grandchildren that she cares for in her home in the mountainous region of Chimbu, PNG. “I have all these young kids under my care and I want them to grow up to be good people,” Tobia says. “It is a lot of work and I don’t have a lot of time to even look after my own backyard. My garden has gotten all bushy now…. The kids' mothers are not around so I do what I have to do.”

Barri was the first man to take part in the positive parenting program in Siure, Chimbu. He says the workshops helped him deal with his anger towards the children. “In the sessions, we learnt that when you are shouting at the children it doesn’t really help the child. I have changed from that behaviour and I have made a commitment in the workshop to stop abusing my children by yelling at them, name calling them and hitting them.”

Positive Parenting - Children from different tribes walking on the road together that divides the two tribes.
The Silku and Kamaneku tribes have opposed one another for generations. The town’s road divides the land between the tribes. The positive parenting movement in the west is not unfamiliar however is has been for the tribes in Papua New Guinea. What is exciting is that it is not only having an impact on relationships with parent and child but improving relationships between parents as well as between communities. This provides hope and optimism for future generations who like all of us, wish to live in peace.

Simon Kelly at one of the several pits he has had to dig to bury all of his sheep. Of 9000 he has had to bury more than 5000 of his sheep. This pit has two of his cows and a couple dozen sheep in it. This group of sheep have mostly died more recently since the fires due to lung damage from smoke inhalation, on Thursday the 16th of January 2020, on Kangaroo Island, South Australia, Australia Jason Wheaton and his sons came to Simon’s property to help him clear the burnt land of deceased animals and fallen trees as well as any other things he might need help with since the fires. (This speaks to the community support that has gathered around the people who have lost so much.)

A mob of kangaroos that managed to survive the fires gather for a feed at Stokes Bay, Kangaroo Island, South Australia, in March 2020. Paul Stanton’s been taking in orphaned wildlife since he was a boy. In his distinctive high-pitched yell, he calls out into the wind, cutting open donated bags of fruit, vegetables and kangaroo pellets. Almost immediately kangaroos and wallabies tentatively emerge from every direction and before long a mob has gathered. There must be at least 100 kangaroos. It’s a blessing to see them in such numbers, given the devastation of their population. Words by @anastsaf

Seven-teen year old Kamundi Makieu Pingiel has been bitten by a soldier snake. The snake bit him while he was asleep in his makeshift tent and managed to bite him through his mosquito net. He was able to kill the snake for anti-venom identification. He had to walk a day to get to the hospital and the venom had reached from the bite on his hand to the top part of his arm. Should the venom manage to travel to the brain the bite would be lethal. Anti-venom treatment was administered shortly after triage.

Seven-year-old Hoth Kuol Juol became ill with Malaria when he was two years old. He continues to suffer multiple seizures, is left with severe disability and no longer recognizes his family. A month prior to this photograph, Hoth suffered a burn on his arm after falling into the cooking fire during a seizure. The burn remained untreated, as his village in Myom was attacked, causing him and his family to flee to Agok. Once there, MSF nurse and medical logistics officer Marteen offered to bring them to the hospital in Abyei - over 2 hours away. Both mother and son suffered severe car sickness throughout the very rough trip and both were already malnourished. Hoth has lost the use of his hand due to the burn. Mary Nyantey is 40 years old. When her village flooded and she was forced to flee, she could not carry her children through the floodwaters. Instead, she tied her children inside a sack made from a large plastic tarp (previously used to cover her home) and swam them to safety, dragging the floating sack of children behind her. While now safe from the floodwaters, she and her family have no regular access to food and are forced to collect a plant called ‘Yell’ from a nearby river to eat. A boy by a small area of crops in Canal Village in Jonglei state, South Sudan. When the worst flooding in more than 50 years engulfed communities along the River Nile in South Sudan last year, thousands of people fled to higher ground, seeking refuge in an old army barracks. Known as Canal Village, it had been a strategic military position decades ago in northern Jonglei state, with the city of Malakal further along the Nile. But its new residents discovered, to their dismay, that within its confines lay an old minefield. 11/08/2022 - Canal Villiage, Malakal, Upper Niles State, South Sudan. "Early this year, UNMAS responded to community requests from a remote village in Canal where IDPs had resettled on a known minefield. In March 2022, following on from several Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) sessions delivered by UNMAS, Chief of Mine Action, Mr. Fran O’Grady, visited Canal to assess how clearance activities could be undertaken, in what was a race against time to get mechanical demining machinery on a barge to the site before the onset of the wet season. Thankfully, this was achieved through solid team effort that resulted in the disposal of more than 25 anti-personnel mines and the clearance of over 17,000 sqm of land, making it safe for the estimated 1,500 people to settle and undertake agricultural activities, as well as for safe access for humanitarian response." - Fran O'Grady UNMAS

Rebecca (one-year-old) sits on the bed that she and her mother Sandra share in Ixtapec. They are from El Salvador and are fleeing the violence in their country. Rebecca had two uncles who were murdered by the mara gangs and one who was recruited into a mara gang - they have not seen him again since that day. They await papers at a refugee centre, known in Mexico as an alberge.

Migrants passing on “La Bestia”: the beast, a freight train that traverses Mexico from the southern to the northern borders of Mexico. The journey is fraught with danger least of all from falling off and being injured on the train. The route it takes is littered with migration police, cartel and military all of who want to exploit those riding it.

Juan - no last name - is 21 years old and from El Salvador. He was born and lived on the streets with his mother until she died when he was 6 years old. At this time he was found by MS13 gang members and he was forced to become a spy, informing on the other major Mara gang M18. He spent 15 years working with both Mara groups; Mara Salvatrucha (MS13) and Calle 18 (M18) street gangs as a spy. In order to cope with the stress of exposure and involvement to violence and killing, he took drugs and self harmed; evidence of which he bares today in rows of cigarette burns all over his body. He is making the journey across Mexico to begin again to start a new life without violence. He hopes to experience love and peace for the first time in his life.

Eric is 35 years old. He is a 'coyote' or 'pollero'; meaning someone who transports or traffics people from Honduras to the United States illegally. He's done the trip 12 times and usually takes two or three people on each trip. He was kidnapped by the Zetas in 2007 for 7 days and by The MS13 in Mexico in 2004. His brother-in-law, Mauricio, was a coyote as well but quit his occupation when he witnessed the murder of a child by the cartel. He had tried to intervene but they beat him up and pushed their fingers into his eyes, blinding him for two days and that was when he escaped.

Doris Zulema Brito Hernandez, aged 53, has been charged with Fraud and Human trafficking. Doris and her husband arranged to take a trailer full of 74 people to Texas in 2003. Of those 19 suffocated, including a 5 year old child. She was arrested at the airport in San Pedro Sula. Family members of those who died filed their reports with the police in separate cities so she was charged in separate states for the same crime. She has three sentences totalling 29 years, which has since been reduced to 22. She has already served 11 years in Tamara Women’s Prison near Tegucigalpa, Honduras. They never arrested her husband because they couldn’t find him even though he would visit her in prison. He has since passed away. Their two children are currently wards of the state of Florida.

A small group of refugees travel across the Suchiate river which sits between the border of Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas Mexico and Tecun Uman, Guatemala. They travel by two giant inner tubes with planks of wood tied to them to make a raft. Their journey across the river is taken very close to the international bridge, which is the legal access to Mexico.

Malgda Corales is 34 years old. She started her training to get into the M18 at the age of 12 and was initiated at the age of 13. She learned how to shoot a gun, assemble guns, and how to kill in order to be an active member of the group. At 16 she was arrested for several murders and sentenced to 18 years jail. She killed MS13 as well as regular people. She has been moved several times around the various prisons of Honduras. Because she dresses like a man the guards beat her like a man. She has been tortured repeatedly in all of the prisons. She is now in maximum security because the M18 want to kill her for trying to leave the group. She has endured several assassination attempts in prison. She has survived 7 gunshot wounds. Human rights organisations attempted to get her out of prison so the penal system sent her to solitary so that the human rights group couldn’t access her. The isolation and abuse is too much so she has tried to kill herself. She is now about to be released from prison and wants to be out of the bandilla and hopes to reintegrate into society. Laura was part of a large group of seven people traveling together who are all from the same neighborhood in San Pedro, Honduras. We followed them from their arrival at the Succhiate river for the next 24 hours. After arriving in Mexico they spent three hours walking through Tapachula in the rain trying to find shelter. After evading a tip off from the bus driver to the migration police they were stranded on the roadside a half an hour walk outside Tapachula.

Elisabeth and her son David (14) sit together in the morning before David goes to work to sell mandarins. David is extremely intelligent and the Maras in El Salvador wanted to recruit him in 2015, so they left with only $5 USD. They slept on the streets and traveled by foot for 40 days. They were deported from Tapachula once. Along their journey two Central American men assaulted them by knifepoint. The men took all their money and sexually assaulted Elisabeth. They have been in the alberge for 20 days and are awaiting a humanitarian visa. She’s has been sexually harassed in the alberge and doesn’t really feel safe but they need to await their visa’s before they can leave. She wants work as a chef and send her son to school.

Wendy an ex-MS13 member says “... I wanted to kill my sister, so I did and before I could kill my brother I was arrested.” When she was 12 years old both her parents were arrested and then she went to live with her sisters. Her brother tried to rape her, so she began to turn to the MS13 gang as a family. With them she felt supported. Once she became a MS13 member – she started using drugs and so she was locked out of her sister’s house. One night she kicked the door to get in and went to bed. Not long after she heard voices of men who broke into the house – all of them raped me and they stole everything. Three days later her sister found her and didn’t believe what she said had happened and accused her of stealing from them. ‘Because they didn’t believe me I wanted to kill my sister, so I did. And before I could kill my brother I was arrested.’ She has now ‘found Jesus’ and so she burnt her MS13 tattoos off herself in order to disassociate with the gangs. Having done this she risks being killed by other MS13 gang members as this is seen as a betrayal of her loyalty to the gang.

Fourty-Seven year old Luis is from Guatemala. Two months prior he was chased by migration agents near the river and fell down the cliff landing in some rocks. He woke up 9 days later in hospital with half his face paralyzed and four skull fractures. Flesh from his leg had been ripped off. He wants to go to the US to find his son who is in the army but doesn't know how to find him. He was fine and healthy before this accident. He wept, “this accident, this journey has changed my life forever."
